The plan
Stargazer is a level-9 board. You don't force it — you flex into it when Stage 3 gives you a Stargazer pair plus 70+ gold heading into 4-1. The ceiling is a Jhin 2 / Aurelion Sol 2 / Bard 2 board that nobody can punch through.
Why level 9 over level 8
Stargazer scales with star levels, not unit count. A Stargazer 4 board at level 9 with two 5-costs out-DPSes any level-8 reroll outside of a 3-star carry. The trade-off is your Stage 4 is fragile — plan to lose 2-3 rounds while pushing 9.
Econ thresholds
4-1: 60g, level 7. 4-2: 70g, level 7. 4-5: 80g, level 8, slow-roll one. 5-1: Push 9, then roll to 30g.
Frontline
Leona + Maokai is the standard duo. Maokai is explicitly the Stargazer Wolf, so he double-dips on trait. Replace Leona with Shen when you hit 9 — the Bulwark trait single-handedly turns a losing Stage 5 into a winning one.
Item priority
Jhin: Infinity Edge + Last Whisper + Quicksilver. Aurelion Sol: Spear of Shojin + Jeweled Gauntlet + Archangel's. Bard takes leftover support items (Shroud, Locket).
Augments
S-tier: Worth the Wait II, Pandora's Bench, Cruel Pact, Verdant Veil, Eclectic Collection.
Skip: any reroll augment, Built Different, single-trait emblems other than Stargazer.
Combat layout
Standard layout: Maokai front-left to bait dive into a Sunfire, Leona front-right against melee, Shen middle. Jhin top-right corner, Aurelion Sol top-left so they can't both be Zephyr'd. Bard back row middle.
TL;DR
Flex into Stargazer when you have natural pairs and the gold to push 9. Don't force it — but when the lobby is full of reroll, this is the comp that wins.
